The Importance of Color
by revka ~ May 29th, 2007. Filed under: Helpful Links.Imagine you are looking for a place to rent. You walk into the first place on your list, and everything in the empty dwelling is white: white floors, white ceilings, white walls, white trim. Rather unimpressed, you scurry to the next apartment. As you walk into this apartment, you are greeted by a color scheme that is neutral yet soothing: taupe walls, white trim, bone-colored ceilings. Which apartment will you be more likely to remember? I would remember the apartment with color much longer than I would remember the stark white place.
Think of the blogs you like to visit. What attracts you to those blogs? Is it the content; the appearance; both? Sure, you can stick with the standard colors and make up for the appearance with great content, but how much better to create your own place in the vast blogosphere, a place colored in such a way that aids visitor memory and makes your blog uniquely your own.
Color is a language in its own right, and creates a distinct impression. I intentionally utilized the primary colors for Little Fun; Little Learning. The blog, after all, is targeted to parents of young children, and what is more juvenile/playful than primary colors? Linda of Mama’s Coffee Corner chose beautiful, coffee-inspired pinks and browns. Her place is warm, inviting, and looks good enough to eat!
Everyone has his own preferred colors. I always lean toward blues. Of my five public blogs, only one does not feature blue as the predominant color. Take a look for yourself : The Porch Light, RS Designs (the old site), Rants, Raves, and Rejects, and Little Fun; Little Learning.
When choosing colors for your blog, consider the following:
- personal color preference
- the blog’s purpose
- the atmosphere you wish to create
- readability
If you are unsure of the exact colors you want, try one of the free services such as Color Picker 3.1 or Web Color Chart’s Hexadecimal Chart. If you need help figuring out how to change your blog’s colors, let me know, and I’ll give you a hand.
