Blogspot 101: Keep Your Photos from Opening when People Left-Click on Them

One of my most popular tutorials tells how to disable right-click at your site. However, several people have commented that while right-click is disabled at their Blogger blog, people are still able to left-click their pictures, which opens the picture in its own window from which the visitor can then download (steal) the picture.

I have the solution for your problem.  First, because people have asked, let me state that even if there was a way to do it, you would never want to disable left click.  Without left-click ability, links (including navigation links) would be useless, and you would lose readers faster than you can say boo.

The reason people can left click on your pictures and download the photo that appears that way is because when you upload an image Blogger automatically links your post image so that clicking on it brings up the image by itself.  You can fix this by doing the following for each picture. (I’m sorry there’s not a quick and easy fix that I know of.)

1. After you have uploaded the picture into your post, click on the Edit HTML tab of the writing area.
2. You should see code at the top of the page that looks something like this:
<a href="http://yoursiteurl.com/yourpicture.jpg"><img alt="S7302723" src="http://yoursiteurl.com/yourpicture.jpg" width="184" align="left" border="0" height="244"/></a>
3. Delete the following sections:
<a href="http://yoursiteurl.com/yourpicture.jpg">
and   </a>
Those are the parts that make the image into a link.
4. MAKE SURE you leave the img section:
<img alt="S7302723" src="http://yoursiteurl.com/yourpicture.jpg" width="184" align="left" border="0" height="244"/>
5. Preview your post.  If your image is still there and does not go to a separate page when you click on it, you did everything correctly and can
save your post or continue writing it.

You will have to make changes to each of your already published pictures individually, but if you really don’t want people to be able to bring them up on a separate page, it would be worth it.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments regarding this tutorial. I’d be happy to help you in any way that I can.

  10. I found your blog through google. I found a blog the other day and the lady gave a code to block ‘right clickers.’ So I blogged about it and gave the code. Because people are smarter than I, it was pointed out that there are ‘left clickers.’ I was unaware of those folks.

    Anyways, I found your blog and I linked yours to mine so people can eliminate left clickers! Thanks for your helpful info.

  15. Thank you. :) I got the part about removing the href code while editing the post, but in Blogger, how do you keep the link code from even appearing in the first place? Do I have to edit the Blogger template in some way?

  16. The better way out then editing the HTML is that you can:
    1) Upload Picture
    2) Click on the LINK icon on the Editor
    3) Hit ENTER
    4) Tadaaa… no more link to the picture

    I really try to find out a way to permanently Disable the link (not to insert a link when uploading picture) but I believe that there is no way out because it is being added by the EDITOR not built in the Template.

    If anyone figure a way to this, please share..

    Hey… That worked out great… But i’ve tried something and the images can still be stolen…
    I restored my windows size and tried to “force-dragged” the images to my desktop… And the image was copied over…
    I guess there’s really no bulletproof way to stop image thievery but still… I Thank You…

  18. If I want to copy any picture then I can easily copy it using page info or using the source code…

  24. This doesnt work at all. I dont know if I am doing this wrong. But I NEED help!!

  25. THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU SOOOOOO MUCH. I have searched for days and days on how to only disable left click on my posts, not my headers. And your simple little idea has done that for me. Thankyou so very much.
    A tip might be that: I could not delete the whole code, i had to leave this in:
    <img (So I only deleted the address of where the image came from and nothing else in the code)
    that way I am only taking out the address, nothing else, and now noone knows where the image came from.
    I figure once I have done this a couple of times it will become second nature.
    Again, THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU for saving my website. You are a star.
